To ensure that these developments are planned in a way that is both sustainable in the long term and of high quality, a wide range of issues relating to land use, urban planning, architecture, open space, transport and the environment must be addressed and translated into concrete proposals for solutions. The Urban Planning Division of the Basel-Stadt Department of Construction and Transport contributes its technical and organisational expertise to the planning process, coordinates between all cantonal departments, commissions the necessary expert reports, and, in the next phase, supports design competitions or study commissions and draws up the development plan. In particular, it also sees itself as a guardian of public interest and architectural heritage. In future, the plan is for parts of the site (which is now privately owned) to be taken into cantonal ownership for use as schools, roads, squares and parks.
